THE ENZYMES

Bryan Symmes (Radio Free Illinois )out on 48th St by Manny's circa 1980
This was me dressed in my most authentically punkrock outfit trying to take my own yearbook shot and look all cool and rock and stuff by doing a kind of Townshendian leap (something I never actually did while playing). I jumped a bit high and so it's a headless shot but it's a good pic of the S-1. You can sort of see where I had the rotary switch taken out and replaced with three three-way toggle switches.
Another headless picture this one I didn't take myself. This is at Madam's Organ almost certainly opening for the Bad Brains. The S-1 was my only guitar then and I would have been playing through an Acoustic 134 combo. Neat duct tape pants huh?
Here's Dave Byers and Gary Gabriel. That's an oxblood colored hard tail strat. Note HR's graffiti on the back wall.
Madam's Organ. Gary's elbow and Mauricio in the back on drums.
Me and Byers on another night at Madam's Organ. In this one you can see the Acoustic amps. About the only good thing about them was that they were light.
Somewhere not pictured would be a Muff Fuzz or a mini Muff Fuzz.

I think this action shot is actually of us tuning.
Here's John Gibson sanding Lawrence Goodby's head. There was a strong current of surreality in that lineup and I have a lot pictures sort of like this.
Wow! ME! Here I am letting that unibrow do the talking. There was ONE SONG called "I'm tired" that I used to er..."sing" though it didn't really have any set lyrics. I have tried to stay away from vocal mics ever since.

Kim Kane wearing the "Brain That Refused to Die" voodoo mask at the 9:30 club around 1982. Note the totally cool custom paint job on his Mustang. He also does cars.
