THE END OF SILENCE

Ah, the first "big" album. A great CD I think. It was material we'd been touring on for a while and had pretty much just come straight off the road from Jane's Addiction/Lollapalooza when we started recording it (I think it was October). We did it in some little studio called the Showplace in Dover New Jersey which shared the building and the name with a topless gogo bar.
Very David Lynch if I recall. Andy Wallace did a good job though I was never sure he really understood what we were about. During the sessions he was having his mind blown by the chart ascent of Nirvana's "Nevermind" which he had mixed. I also recollect exactly where I was standing in the live room there when I was told Miles was dead. Big moment. All the songs on there are very long for what was out at the time I think the shortest one is around 6 minutes. "Another Life" came as a bit of a shock when I heard it as the entire first verse and chorus were missing. Hmmm...
GEAR: I think it was mostly the green Kramer and my black SG R1. Again the rack mounted Marshall preamp and amp. We also used the DI out on a PRS head (which the studio folks had to go pick up before they'd believe it wasn't tube). I did a lot of the overdubs barefoot with the playback coming through a stage wedge. That gave it a more live feel and was more in the vibe of having just been playing it live every day. It also made the guitars react more like they did onstage (i.e. I was/am used to being able to get feedback off the wedge).
