The first electric record. Very much a guitar record. I've never wanted to be a singer/songwriter or really express myself any other way than being a guitar player. It's where my deep voice is. The nice thing about being below the radar is that there's less pressure not to do just as you please so, though a lot less weird than "Language", this one's still odd. Done in collaboration with Brandon Finley. I've always had the unusual good fortune to play with fantastic drummers but, even among them, he stands out. I did a lot of the basic tracks at home and then cut the drums and did some overdubs at WGNS (which was a studio, not a radio station) in D.C. The bulk of the guitar dubs were actually done at the Rollins Band rehearsal space when we were at Context on Avenue A in New York. Theo did a heroic job of mixing it though I could only afford two days for him to do it. This CD also contains one of my favorite solos "doubt of the benefit". It's not technically great and one of the notes os winceingly flat but it's just one of those moments where I feel I really said pretty completely what I felt at that instant (a very rare thing). I'm not shy about paying homage when I really feel it. Thus there's "Tribute" and "Respistory" which are meant to show the respect and debt I feel for Sonny Sharrock and also "Playing in Papa's Clothes" which is for George Clinton and the indescribable place P-Funk has played in my life. The title is meant to mean that "I really KNOW that I'm playing dress-up with a style that's WAY too big for me". The fantastic Greg Boyer of the P-Funk horns actually did a beautiful Fred Wesley-type trombone solo on it. He also did arrangements and led the section on a couple of other tracks too. Cool.
